Cancun splits cleanly into two very different places: the narrow barrier island known as the Hotel Zone, lined with beach resorts on one side and the lagoon on the other, and the mainland downtown area (El Centro) where locals actually live and prices drop. A growing number of travelers also base themselves further south along the Riviera Maya corridor and use Cancun's airport as their gateway. Picking the right base depends on whether you want beachfront convenience, local atmosphere, or easy access to Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

- Book Hotel Zone properties by the kilometer marker on Boulevard Kukulcan, not just the hotel name, so you know which end of the strip you'll be on.
- The public bus (marked Hoteles or Zona Hotelera) runs the length of Kukulcan and is far cheaper than taxis for getting between the island and downtown.
- If you want a real beach without an all-inclusive contract, downtown-based stays let you visit public beach access points on the island for a day rather than book a resort.
- Check current rates on the site before booking, since Cancun pricing swings sharply between peak winter weeks and the off-season.
- A one-night airport-area stay makes sense for red-eye flights, but it's not a base for exploring the city.
- If Tulum or Playa del Carmen ruins are your main goal, weigh a Riviera Maya resort against a Hotel Zone base with a rental car or organized tour.
