Pack a bag you can carry, not just roll — cobblestones and stairs are constant in Alfama, Bairro Alto, and parts of Chiado.
The 28 tram and several funiculars help with the hills, but they get crowded; walking downhill and taking transit uphill is a common strategy.
Three to four nights covers the main sights at a reasonable pace; add a day if you want to do Belém and a day trip to Sintra or Cascais without rushing.
Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) bring milder temperatures than the July-August peak, which can be hot and busy.
If you plan to base yourself for day trips to Sintra or Cascais, staying near Cais do Sodré or another well-connected train link saves time over Alfama.
